Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides

commonly known as lawn marshpennywort, Asian pennywort, or pennywort, is a small, low-growing herbaceous plant from the Apiaceae (carrot or parsley) family. It’s often used in traditional medicine and occasionally in aquascaping or as ground cover due to its delicate, trailing habit.

Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides is a creeping, mat-forming plant that spreads via slender stolons (runners). It forms a low, dense carpet, rooting at the nodes. The leaves are round to kidney-shaped (orbicular), 0.5–2 cm wide, with a scalloped or crenate edge.  Each leaf has a long petiole attached near the center (peltate), resembling miniature lily pads.  Slightly succulent and bright green to yellow-green. Flowers are tiny, inconspicuous, pale yellow or greenish.  Arranged in small, simple umbels.  Usually not a highlight of the plant; rarely noticed unless closely inspected.

Native to tropical and subtropical Asia, but has naturalized in other warm regions.

Growth Conditions:

    • Light: Full sun to partial shade.

    • Soil: Moist, well-draining; tolerates poorly drained soil and compacted areas.

    • Water: Prefers high humidity and consistently moist soil.

  • Aquascaping Use:
Sometimes used in aquariums or paludariums, especially in shallow water or emersed setups. It does better in humid, wet environments than fully submerged.
