The Spadefoot Toad (Spea hammondii) is a nocturnal desert toad native to the southwestern United States and areas of Mexico. The species can be cared for in many of the same ways as other pet toads.
A terrarium 2 feet wide by 3 feet long is a great enclosure size. Fill the enclosure with several inches of substrate, as they tend to burrow (a sandy soil mixture is best). Ensure the temperature remains between 75 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit (keeping the heat source off to one side of the enclosure to allow for a heat gradient. Proper ventilation is also important, as they are primarily desert dwelling animals, and humidity should remain low. Although they come from arid environments, a water source should be provided in a dish big enough for the toad to soak in.
Feed your toad(s) a diet of appropriately sized feeder insects. Dusting the insects in powder supplements (calcium/multi-vitamin) is highly recommended.
If you want to frequently observe your toad(s) out and about, make sure to use dim lighting. They are most active at dusk/dawn.
If you are interested in them or any other reptile you can call or email the store for more information.
