Ludwigia sedioides

Ludwigia sedioides, commonly known as Mosaic Plant or False Loosestrife, is a striking aquatic plant prized for its colorful, geometric foliage. Native to South America (especially Venezuela and Brazil), it is often used in ponds and water gardens for its ornamental appeal.

  • Growth Habit:
Floating or rooted aquatic plant that forms rosettes of leaves on the water surface.
It spreads outward in a mosaic or checkerboard pattern, hence the name.

  • Leaves:

    • Diamond to wedge-shaped with toothed margins.

    • Bright green with reddish or purplish edges, especially in high light.

    • Leaves are arranged in radiating whorls, forming a distinctive mosaic-like mat.

    • Individual rosettes can reach 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) across.

  • Stems:

    • Submerged stems are soft and reddish, and can root at nodes.

    • Will produce floating rosettes at the surface.

  • Flowers:

    • Small, bright yellow flowers bloom above the water surface.

    • Typically produced in summer, adding to its ornamental value.
